What is a Deed Poll?
A Deed Poll is a legal document by which a person formally declares a change of name. It is a unilateral declaration and must be signed in the presence of a lawyer. In Singapore, you generally need one to change your name on your NRIC (identity card), passport and other records, unless ICA accepts another document such as a marriage certificate.

A Deed Poll is a legal document by which a person formally declares that they have given up their former name and adopted a new one. It must be signed in the presence of a lawyer. Signing it does not change your records by itself: you then apply to ICA to update your NRIC, and update your passport and other records.

Yes. Both parents must sign the Deed Poll for a child under 21, subject to ICA's requirements. Only one parent may sign where she is a single parent as shown on the child's birth certificate, where that parent has an Order of Court empowering him or her to unilaterally change the child's name, or where the other parent has died and did not appoint a legal guardian. Sole custody is not sufficient.
We usually prepare the draft Deed Poll within 1 to 3 working days of a complete online submission. The signing appointment is short, and we usually release the executed Deed Poll on the day of signing. You must then apply to ICA to update your IC within 28 days of the date of the Deed Poll.
Yes. Singapore Permanent Residents (PRs) changing their name must first update their passport with the new name, then execute a deed poll with a lawyer, and finally update their IC with ICA within 28 days.
